Here, we have another installment in our Oilixia Origins blog series. Every ingredient that goes into our products is carefully chosen for its unique qualities and this series will take a closer look at each ingredient and the positive contributions they make to our overall health and beauty. Let’s explore Tunisian Neroli essential oil, which features in our Explorer Blend Facial Oil.

THE PROCESS OF EXTRACTION

Neroli is an extremely precious essential oil created from the fragrant flowers of the bitter orange tree. The fresh flowers are steam distilled to extract the oil in a delicate and lengthy process that takes place mainly during the spring months and early mornings to catch the flower buds as they start to open. Neroli is a highly concentrated substance with around 1,000 pounds of orange blossom flowers needed to make just one pound of oil, making this one of the most expensive essential oils in the world.

THE HISTORY OF NEROLI

Originating in Tunisia and primarily cultivated across North Africa and France, neroli is widely believed to have been named during the 16th century for Princess Anne Maria de La Tremoille of Nerola, Italy, who fell in love with the striking fragrance and introduced it to her homeland. The oil itself has been used since the days of the ancient Egyptians when it was recognised for its health, wellbeing and spiritual benefits.

THE SCENT

Neroli oil beautifully blends floral, sweet aromas with citrus sharp and exotic tones for an intense fragrance. It is often used in perfumes and deodorants as it blends well with other citrus scents, herb families and essential oils, particularly lavender, jasmine and bergamot. It is the main ingredient in Germany’s famous Eau de Cologne and even has some famous followers – Napoleon Bonaparte was a big fan and used neroli oil in both cologne and aftershave.

THE FEELING

Refreshing, soothing and totally uplifting!

THE SKINCARE BENEFITS OF NEROLI

Neroli oil is used to treat skin conditions such as acne, stretch marks and scarring. It is also used to improve overall skin health by keeping skin supple, improving circulation and helping to stimulate skin surface cell regeneration. It’s a highly effective emollient, tonic and moisturiser, helping to keep skin smooth and maintain a healthy oil and moisture balance, whilst boosting from within for a healthy, youthful glow.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF NEROLI

Neroli is highly concentrated, making it a powerful health booster. It supports the metabolic and immune systems, helping the body to fight infection and create an overall healthy environment. It works as an antiseptic and protects against skin infections, while its anti-spasmodic qualities make neroli an effective pain reliever for those suffering from menstrual cramps and migraines. It is also a common digestive aid – soothing the stomach, relaxing the muscles and reducing inflammation.

THE WELLBEING BENEFITS OF NEROLI

Neroli oil is renowned for its calming, soothing fragrance and it has been used since ancient times as a natural anti-depressant. It helps to combat negative emotions, insomnia and exhaustion by easing tension and stress, relaxing the body and mind. It is also commonly used in aromatherapy.
