Ah, our new Gummy Cleanser. It certainly gets some quizzical looks when people first see it, so we thought we’d give you the low-down about what it is, why it’s gummy and how to use it.
WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM?
The name ‘Gummy’ dropped into our founder, Alexandra’s head as she tried to describe the unique texture of our new cleanser. It’s not really a balm. Nor a cream. It’s definitely not an oil. It’s sort of sticky … kind of tacky … but more gummy. And, the Gummy Cleanser was born. We think it’s fairly appropriate, since it is inspired by Australia – home to the infamous eucalyptus trees or ‘gum’ trees!
WHY IS IT GUMMY?
The gummy texture can be mainly attributed to the way that three of our ingredients with quite different textures mix and interact; namely Xanthan Gum, Glycerin and Cocamidopropyl Betaine. Sometimes known as corn starch gum, Xanthan gum is a natural origin ingredient, created through fermenting carbohydrate and Xanthomonas campestris (which is a type of bacteria). Xanthan Gum is used in skincare (and often cooking!) to help thicken up formulations. Glycerin is a natural origin ingredient that is a clear and syrupy liquid. It’s made by combining water and vegetable fat and it acts as a humectant, which helps the skin to retain moisture. Lastly, Cocomidopropyl Betaine, also a natural origin ingredient, is derived from coconut oil and helps the cleanser to foam when water is added. When the three come together, they mix to create our unique gumminess!
WHAT CAN A GUMMY CLEANSER DO FOR MY SKIN?
The beauty of our gummy texture is that it helps to lift off makeup and daily grime through its stickiness. When the texture becomes tacky, you can also press and lift your fingers against the skin to give a good massage and stimulate circulation.
HOW DO I USE IT?
Take a small dollop and massage onto dry skin. As the cleanser spreads over the skin, the texture will become tacky. When this happens, press and lift the skin to create a suction effect. This will further help lift of dirt and grime, as well as give your skin a massage. However, be careful not to drag the skin when the texture becomes gummy. Once you have massaged and pressed for about 10-20 seconds, wet your fingertips with a bit of water and continue to massage your face. The cleanser will turn into a beautiful milk and then rinse off effortlessly, taking makeup and grime with it.
